Dr. Maternal–Fetal Immune Adaptation and Metabolic Programming During Pregnancy: A Theoretical Integrative Study

Pregnancy represents a highly dynamic physiological state characterized by complex immunological modulation and metabolic reprogramming aimed at sustaining fetal growth while preserving maternal health. The maternal body undergoes profound changes involving endocrine, immune, and vascular systems to accommodate the semi-allogeneic fetus. This study presents a theoretical integrative model exploring the interaction between maternal immune tolerance, placental signaling, and metabolic adaptations during pregnancy. It highlights how disruptions in these pathways contribute to complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, and intrauterine growth restriction. The article synthesizes current biological concepts and proposes a unified framework linking maternal systemic responses with fetal developmental programming. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for improving prenatal care and reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity.
